Remember?

Name-tag pinned to the front of the shirt. A fancy bag showing Tom chasing Jerry. A look of Alice in Wonderland across the face. Do you remember?

Do you remember?

Those crisp pages of new text-book that were flipped back and forth without much reading. The colourful pictures and “Fun Facts” that smiled back gleefully from nooks and corners of black text were favourites.

Remember that feeling of utter joy when your sharpened pencil wrote the date on the top-right corner in a fresh exercise book that had been waiting, with open arms, to be filled with innocent expressions?

And the excitement of creating your own wind while running in circles on the playground! Remember the tickle in your belly as the swing came down with free vigour?

Remember the time you drew a puppy and coloured it orange? The teacher was in dilemma whether to be amused or bewildered.

Children indeed have the purest sense of harmony. Don’t you remember singing “Away From Home” along with all your classmates? And the long hours of dance practice in an ethnic wear for Rabindra Jayanti?

Don’t you, now that you are so wise, recline in your seat and remember the days when the heat wasn’t so scorching and the nights weren’t so foggy? Those days of only black or white and no murky shades of grey.
